CONCEPT BOOK COVER DESIGN

Journey to Mexico

My passport photo cover design for Antonin Artaud’s book, Journey to Mexico effortlessly expresses the title of the book as well as Artaud’s experiences of his travel to Mexico as a foreigner attempting to “escape European civilization.” When I learned that Artaud's passport was issued in 1936 and Artaud left France to go to Mexico in January 1936, I put two in two together and implemented the passport photo to the cover design.

DESIGN PROCESS

My Style Choices

Additionally, the typesetting of the cover design was something I took into consideration when designing the cover. I believe the font I choose, Source Serif Variable Bold for the cover title, as well as, for the author and spine was a great choice. For the subtitle, “Revolutionary Messages & the Tarahumara,” the publisher label “Contra Mundum Press” on the spine, and the back cover I used the font Times. I chose to use the gold color for the font on the leather spine and the black color font for the cover and back of the book. The contrasting color choice is significant as it makes the title on the covers and spine pop. In my opinion, the fonts I chose were appropriate for the subject of the book as well as the design. Typesetting plays a crucial role when it comes to book covers and design because it sets an overall tone to the reader and can also make designs visually appealing.
